Each spring, County EMAs, PA Emergency Management Agency, and all National Weather Service offices serving PA sponsor a week of Severe Weather Awareness & Preparedness before the typical onset of severe and flash flood season. Severe Weather Awareness Week: What is the criteria for a thunderstorm to be severe? It needs to have one of the following criteria: 58+ mph winds, 1+ inch hail, or a tornado. These criteria create a threat to life and property. Note: A storm does NOT need a tornado to be severe!
