This issue is not going away and Texas isn't alone. We have to intervene. Access to cool and safe temperatures is a human right, not a luxury!

If you wanna understand heat in prisons, 2 vital reports came out this year: the Justice Dpt's investigation into Mississippi’s Parchman prison & a survey of Texas prisoners by TPCA Texas Prisons Community Advocates + Dr. Carlee Purdum + Dr. BCharrise I nod to both in my latest 1/ grist.org/equity/prison-…

All of Puerto Rico lost power last Sunday. Today is Friday and more than 920k people are still without power. People have died because of generators exploding or their house catching fire due to candles. Some supermarkets will have to shut down bc they’re running out of fuel.

Two more detainees died in the Harris County Jail over the weekend. That brings the total to **21** this year. The last time >21 people died there in a year was 2006, when 22 died. Given that there're still 3 months left this year, it looks like we're on track to exceed that.

You know that colleague that is really good at derailing meetings with abstract semi relevant thoughts & has answers but to questions the team lead didn’t actually ask? Well today…

A new Vera Institute of Justice report shows unnecessarily punitive responses to probation violations, drug use, and poverty are driving the surge in jail populations across GA, particularly in rural counties. This comes at a time when jail deaths are surging. ajc.com/news/record-nu…

We need more eyes looking at what emergency management, emergency response, and basic safety infrastructure looks like in prisons. There’s so little accountability.

Statewide Leadership Council worked on a bill that would allow a board to create a plan to be prepared for emergencies. The time to prepare is not when the emergency hits. There are lives depending on the state inside of these prisons. Dr. Carlee Purdum Texas A&M University

A request! If you've taught my work in your classes and/or used the EJ/CJ Syllabus on my lab's site, can you let me know? I have a major pre-tenure review this summer and may be able to go for tenure next summer (soooo close!) if I can show major impacts on my fields of study!
