Our recent trial results show that cow environment also helps fibre digestibility! Cows in sheds that are lighter and airier with better cubicles and wider walkways beat their counterparts in older style sheds every time, even groups on the same farm!

🐮Ruminant Technical Manager for Cargill UK, Philip Ingram states “All farmers should target a fibre digestibility score of at least 40% and preferably 50% and above. This is an area where there’s great scope for improvement on most dairy units.”🌱

In the weeks after turning dairy cows🐮out to pasture, dips in average milk fat can be 0.5% and a 0.35% depression is typical. This is because fresh young grass has a high oil content and this interferes with the milk fat production pathway, severely effecting the milk cheque.🥛

Nigel Airey milks 78 Holstein cows🐮producing 9000L At 4.5% fat and 3.3% protein. He also uses Cargill’s Equaliser® Cream🍦in his cake and this has mitigated the issue of lower milk fats at grazing and has kept milk fat on target right through the grazing season!🌱

A recent trial was conducted to investigate Equaliser® Cream’s effectiveness. 25 farms trialed the product with 13 starting before and 12 after the usual dip in fat after grazing. Those who introduced the buffer early had the best overall response, but all farms saw improvement!

So convinced of Equaliser® Cream’s effectiveness, after trying numerous other products to no avail, Nigel Airey now puts his Dairy herd🐮onto it a few weeks before turnout. “It more than pays for itself by maintaining milk quality, keeping the milk cheque on target.”

During a recent trial 13 farms started using Equaliser Cream before the usual milk fat dip at turnout. This mitigated a drop in milk fat and recording an improvement of 0.4% in May compared to the previous year, as shown in figure 1 below.

Consistent improvements in poultry feed efficiency, reflected in a reduction in feed conversion rates have been recorded in large scale UK broiler flock trials in 2023/2024 where Cargill’s advanced starter pellet Neochicc® has been used.

Debby Brown, (Dugdale’s ruminant veterinary advisor) researched the specialised rumen buffer Equaliser® Cream as an alternative to Palm fats when their cost increased. She tried it on a zero-grazing herd and had positive results, milk fats were maintained!”🐮

Equaliser® cream has key ingredients to help reduce the impact of the high oil content of the diets on milk fats. The response is rapid with increases in milk fat typically happening within days of introducing Equaliser® Cream into the cow’s diets.

During a recent trial, 12 farms started feeding Equaliser® Cream after their usual dip in milk fat at turnout. After they started feeding it, they saw a milk fat improvement within a week of 0.33% with an average increase in one month of 0.51%.

“I tried the new cake (ft Equaliser® Cream) in April 2023 when milk fats started to drop.” States Nigel Airey, a dairy farmer from Lancashire. “Within 3 weeks they’d recovered to the 4.5% level, and this remained steady all summer, right through the grazing season.”

Following success on farm, Dugdale Nutrition replaced C16 fats in compounds with Equaliser® Cream for herds challenged with milk fat levels resulting from oily diets, either from grazing or from high levels of byproducts. Results have been consistently good.🐮

Debbie Brown (Dugdale’s ruminant veterinary adviser) states that the compound nut produced using Cargill’s Equaliser® Cream is better quality compared to a nut made with C16 fats which historically were a challenge to pellet quality.

🐮An Equaliser® Cream trial took place on 25 farms from 2021 to 2023 found the average financial benefit of adding it to the commercial dairy cow diets was 51p/cow/day and for an average of 155 cows this equates to £2,412/month based on milk prices at the time of the trial.💰

Recent trial results showed an overall improvement in FCR where Neochicc® was used, regardless of the baseline performance level on each farm. This was consistent and equated to an FCR reduction of around two points in FCR in Neochicc® fed birds compared to the control birds.🐤

Nigel Airey always has a boost in milk yields after turnout. However, as milk yields increased, he struggled to maintain milk fat, that was until he started feeding Equaliser® Cream which counters the negative effects of high oil content diets in spring and early summer diets. 🐮
