If we provide feedback without an opportunity for the student to use it to improve, we've simply told them what they're struggling with and then sent the message that we don't care enough to let them get better at it. Feedback can't just be leaving comments on a page.

Another #firstweek activity is to have students organize their Drive. Have you ever looked at their #Googledrive?? It's similar to looking under their bed! #messy Too many times we assume Ss have #Google skills and don't explicitly teach them. bit.ly/3JNqrUZ

Big Idea 2 in the PLC at Work Process: We acknowledge that the best way to help students learn at higher levels is to lend a hand to and lean on our colleagues. #atplc

The role of a co-teacher is not to be an assistant helping a lead teacher. The co-teachers work together to plan, teach, assess, and reflect. #LeadInclusion #EdChat #SpedChat

𝕊𝕔𝕠𝕥𝕥 ℕ𝕦𝕟𝕖𝕤 If schools want students to cultivate social-emotional learning skills, they have to be woven into the fabric of our students' classes. They cannot be treated as add-ons. Research shows #SEL benefits everything from academic performance to anxiety rates to classroom management.

Moment of Truth: Does your school prioritize instruction in essential academic skills and dispositions together? If not, this tool might help you to think through just what that work might look like in action: bit.ly/3pCtrKG #atplc #RTIaW

Such an important #RTIaW and #atplc reminder: Interventions can't make up for fundamental cultural and structural weaknesses in buildings. Get your culture and structure right FIRST. Then, start planning for interventions.

If I have a concern about something at my kid’s school… I should: A. Post about it on social media OR B. Contact someone at the school who can actually do something about it (I’m gonna go with B!)

Does your school add qualifiers when talking about ensuring that all students learn at the highest levels? If so, you have some cultural work to do. If we don't believe that all kids can learn, how will we ever make it happen? #RTIaW #atplc

Today’s #ProudTeacherMoment: My co-teacher and I had our 9th graders delete their inboxes (record of *unread* emails was close to 4,000!) and then turn off Google Classroom email notifications to increase email manageability.

Helping students to complete assignments isn't an intervention. Intervention is systematically moving a student to mastery on a critical skill using a research-based practice. #LeadInclusion #SblChat #EdChat #MasteryChat #AcademicChatter #ATAssessment #EdLeaders #TeacherTwitter

Amen to this. Changing grading practices without changing anything else honestly just results in chaos. A change in grading without a change in teaching philosophy usually ends up doing more harm.

Sometimes PLC conversations keep circling because we do not have all of the answers. It is okay to table conversations until a later date so that more information can be gathered. #PLCreflection

I'd argue that the biggest mistake schools make when creating a system of interventions in their buildings is rushing directly to conversations about what intervention will look like. Our first steps are to become crystal clear on what is essential for kids to learn. #RTIaW

Pulled together a self-assessment tool that students can use to evaluate themselves against five habits of successful individuals. Check it out here: docs.google.com/document/d/1aZ… Would love to hear your thoughts about it.
