Feed use by livestock globally. Panel a is total feed, panel b is the breakdown by human food competing feedstuffs. 🐄🐂 consume the most feed - more animal mass to support & they are ruminants is why; however, they are more minor competitors with human food compared to 🐓🦃🐖

The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act of 2014 (SGMA) often seems like THE biggest story in California agriculture. It must be affecting ag decisions already, right? Ellen Bruno and I did a deep dive... and our best answer seems to be no A long🧵on what we found and why

While irrigation is valuable for climate change adaptation, irrigated ag leads to GHG hotspots through multiple pathways: pumping on-farm and for water projects, increased N2O, and groundwater degassing. We provide the first natl comprehensive assessment: rdcu.be/dPEX6

The South St. Vrain-James Creek diversion point! This dam, and the canal it feeds, were the focus of Coffin v Left Hand, the court case which set the doctrine of prior appropriation. This ditch is why water rights in the West work the way they do! "First in time, first in right"

Super interesting: Imperial Irrigation District in CA uses more water than entire states! Much goes towards alfalfa production, with 2M tons exported in 2022. Many here have senior property rights in water. projects.propublica.org/california-far…
