My Fave ‘A’ Games No. 29 Arcadia 64 Imagine’s zapper is initially intriguing as it's fast and frantic, but enjoyment quickly evaporates as the gameplay is super repetitive and ridiculously hard. It's also glitchy and flickery, and the controls are very poor. Nice boxart though!

The #C64 A to Z My Fave ‘A’ Games No.28 Adventures of Basildon Bond One of many awful 80s TV tie-ins (who thought a Russ Abbott game was a good idea?!), TAOBB is a poor Impossible Mission clone with crap graphics & dull gameplay. It is to gaming what ‘Atmosphere’ is to music.

The #C64 A to Z My Fave A Games No.27 Amazon Warrior/Arcana Geoff Sumner only made 2 C64 games, and both were huge rip-offs! Amazon Warrior stole from Forbidden Forest, and Arcana copied Entombed/Staff of Karnath. How on earth did New Generation get away with publishing them?!

The #C64 A to Z My Fave ‘A’ Games No.26 Astro Chase Well presented with a cool intro/outro, nice graphics, decent music, and fast multidirectional scrolling, Astro Chase was pretty impressive in 1984. Under the gloss, it’s a simple shooter, but still it's good fun for a while.

The #C64 A to Z My Fave ‘A’ Games No.25 Army Moves With nice graphics & music, this Moon Patrol/Blue Thunder/Green Beret mash-up has lots going for it. Sadly, the stupidly hard gameplay spoils things. A shame. It could’ve been a top title if they’d dialled down the difficulty.

The #C64 A to Z My Fave ‘A’ Games – No.24 Avenger (Commodore) One of the C64’s earliest titles, Avenger is a Space Invaders clone so close you half expected Taito’s lawyers to invade. Basic sights and sounds, but the arcade tension is bang on.

The #C64 A to Z My Fave A Games No.23 Attack of the Mutant Camels Inspired by the Atari VCS game Empire Strikes Back, Minter’s mutant blaster is packed with addictive arcade action. Its trippy sound & psychedelic visuals turned blasting giant camels into a surreal C64 classic.

The #C64 A to Z My Fave A Games No 22 Automania The 1st Wally Week game, Automania introduced us to Mikro-Gen’s hapless everyman & launched one of the 80s’ most beloved series. Graphics & sound are basic (& it's rock hard) but it offers a good burst of quirky, platforming fun.

The #C64 A to Z My Fave ‘A’ Games – No.21 Arcade Classics 4 classic arcade games for less than £2? Yes please! Solid versions of Asteroids, Snake, Space Wars and Space Invaders made this C64 title a bargain must-buy. Worth it for the outstanding Rob Hubbard theme tune alone.

The #C64 A to Z My Fave ‘A’ Games - No. 20 Ark Pandora Ark Pandora brings welcome variety to the arcade adventure genre with innovative icon-based controls, challenging puzzles, and quirky enemies. It is an unusual but thoroughly engaging game.

The #C64 A to Z My Fave ‘A’ Games No.19 Auf Wiedersen Monty Monty on the Run's sequel is very similar to its predecessor. Graphics are decent & the music's fab (but not as awesome as the original) & while the gameplay is fun at first, there’s a sense you’ve seen it all before.

Spectrum calendar 2026 - it's a bobby dazzler!

The #C64 A to Z My Fave A Games No.18 ACE/ACE 2 ACE & ACE 2 both deliver cockpit-based, jet combat action. ACE mixes flight sim & blasting gameplay, while ACE 2 simplifies things into Top Gun-inspired 1-on-1 dogfights. Nice graphics, decent sound, great gameplay - pretty ACE!

#C64 A to Z My Fave A Games No.17 Ancipital Jeff Minter’s Ancipital is a surreal blaster across 100 screens. You fire only when moving, battling bizarre baddies as you progress. Tough yet hypnotic, it’s classic Llamasoft: colourful, original, eccentric & utterly compelling.
