Great to take part again in FPCI’s AOIP Vision Group Conference again this year, supported by Japan Foundation 国際交流基金 and 政策研究大学院大学(GRIPS). Thanks to the working group on maritime security, on which I played deputy to Adrian Ang’s chair.

Update: I'm told ANZ and the govt have now reached an agreement on this (as Chalmers flagged) which will secure the bank's presence across the Pacific. Sounds like an announcement is fairly imminent although I imagine Cyclone Alfred might complicate timing abc.net.au/news/2024-11-1…

One of the joy of diplomatic life is reencountering familiar faces from previous postings. Happy to see you again Bryce Wakefield & to meet your Indo-Pacific Cooperation Network group. Glad they could discover more about 🇫🇷 in the Pacific while visiting FS Vendémiaire!

A great discussion about strategic empathy with Dr Claire Yorke from Deakin University, ably hosted by Bryce Wakefield Australian Institute of International Affairs. With our societies and international order changing fast, it’s even more important to try to understand how other people think. Can’t wait for the book!

Of course, Emmanuel Macron rightly points out that France is a resident power, but it is noteworthy that recent statements about new strategic pacts in the Indo-Pacific don't really come from the (Indo-, Asia- or South Pacific bits of the) region itself. theguardian.com/world/2025/may…
