Our space (front and back) is favoured by Porcellio scaber #woodlice, so very pleased to see an #Armadillidium depressum (I think) today, 5/04/2024. #Biodiversity Grateful to BMIG for any comment/correction.

Marine centipede Hydroschendyla submarina from L'Eree SHinglebank in Guernsey last week. Fantastic centipedes and always good to see. Also saw tons of the marine carabid beetle Aepus robinii and isopod Dynamene bidentata. BMIG

Possibly the most colourful one seen in the garden & spotted pottering about on the house wall yesterday - what we think is a Southern Pill Woodlouse (Armadillidium depressum)? BMIG

Some beautiful pics of Porcellio spinicornis 'Painted' or 'Brickwork' woodlouse (not Philoscia muscorum), a lovely species to find. The very dark head and colourful markings are distinctive.

Came across this large colony of the non-native millipede Stosatea italica in the Royal Fort Gardens, Bristol this weekend. A rather pretty blind species. I counted at least 67 but I didn't want to cause too much disturbance. BMIG

Found at least 32 winter-active Greenhouse Millipedes (Oxidus gracilis) in the Royal Fort Gardens, Bristol this weekend. This exotic species was long thought to be unable to survive British winters but these seemed to be doing just fine. BMIG

Decided to look in the back garden and my luck had not ran out yet. Found several Buddelundiella cataractae. that's a new species for me and there is only one previous record from Bristol (on NBN, not in the updated atlas). I imagine I had just overlooked them all these years!

Two beautiful blind millipede species: the red-spotted Blaniulus guttulatus and the orange-spotted Boreoiulus tenuis. Leigh Woods, Somerset.

Haplopodoiulus spathifer is a millipede known from the Pyrenees and from a few botanic gardens in the UK. When present they can occur in good no.s. Here are some from the Royal Fort Gardens, Bristol. Note the projecting telson and the male's 1st pair of legs shaped like a hook.

Word of the day: collum; Latin for neck and especially for the first large body segment behind the head of a millipede, which lacks legs. Aptly illustrated by this photo of the pill millipede Glomeris marginata filched from the ⁦BMIG⁩ website.

New species for me and not previously recorded from Bristol: Cylindroiulus londinensis A species restricted to the British Isles, W France, and N Spain. Recognised by the white blunt-tipped telson ('tail').

What a great feature story to share on Darwin Day. Jess and colleagues collected isopods with The Marine Biological Association to contribute to Jess' research which is re-writing the Isopod family tree. Hear from Jess about her early interest in science and what she's doing now!

Recently in #Plymouth. Think #Philoscia muscorum (in bike shelter on university campus). Rear part noticeably narrower which I think is the stepped shape referred to by experts. Grateful for any comment/correction from BMIG. iRecord #Woodlouse

Porcellio laevis. On the compost heaps of the University of Bristol Botanic Gardens last weekend. It's a rather rare species these days.

BMIG I don’t suppose anyone could help me identify this large-ish (c. 4 cm long) millipede? I initially mistook it for an earthworm at first glance, partly because of the pronounced taper of the body towards the head. Thank you.
