My dissertation is titled “The Architecture of Education: Nation-building, Social Class, and Modernity in Ghana” I made a painting for the cover art (obviously 😂) which I titled ‘understructure, superstructure’ The painting speaks to my findings and arguments.

The study is truly an amalgam of my professional interests as a scholar of the history and politics of architecture in Africa, and my personal curiosities as Ghanaian trying to make sense of the nation I was formed in.

My dissertation is an account of the making of, being in, and belonging in Ghana analytically explored through school buildings, the building of schools, and experiences of schooling.

With a question-led, “undisciplined” (Sharpe, 2016) methodology and drawing on archival and field research I make two connected arguments:

First, I argue that nation-building through the building of secondary schools was not just a unidirectional, top-down process by elites… but that it also occurred through the activities of various excluded peoples in what I term nation-building from the ground up.

Second, I argue that people in Ghana use the sociopolitical and physical architectures of secondary schools to find and place themselves and others in sociopolitical hierarchies (such as class) and sociocultural attitudes (such as modernness) within and beyond the nation.

I recently read that most people think they want children when they actually want babies. At first I was confused but it adds up. A lot of desires about wanting to build a family, usually focuses on the early years of a child, rarely when they become teenager or an adult.

Yes raising humans is not easy. Personally I’m savoring all the stages, watching these little humans become their own individual selves right before my eyes. It’s fascinating

First, read Nightbloom by Peace Medie. It's out now. Then preorder Anansi's Gold by Yepoka Yeebo. It comes out on 1st August. Two excellent books by two of my favourite Ghanaian authors! And yes I'm having a total 'all my guys are ballers' moment. Cos the way these women can write.

Honestly I think we should protest one time in peak December when all the visitors are here and visiting that fraud everyday. Let’s ruin it for everyone. #OccupyJulorbiHouse
