1/ Two years ago, I stood in the dairy aisle of the last grocery in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. It's the poorest place in the US, with the lowest life expectancy. But the store, like a lot of independent retailers, was vibrant. Signs in English & Lakota. School pride gear on walls.

Today is the feast of St Thomas of Canterbury. On this day, 854 years ago, in the early evening, St Thomas was hacked to death in the north transept of his own cathedral by a party of knights who wished, in doing so, to please Henry II. Here is the site of his martyrdom.

Take a stroll in these waning hours of the snowstorm, if you can manage it. There’s something magical about watching the snowflakes flutter against the street lights, the quiet and the pristiness of the freshly coated landscape.
