April is Earth Month! This month, let's support sustainable, climate-friendly actions and raise awareness about how climate justice can be furthered. Here are some ways to invest in and honor our planet: bit.ly/3URonAd

~80% of the interactions are along the lines of "that's cheating!" or "that's not fair!" or "THESE are the rules." It's incredible to watch the fascination with "what is" in the toddler and preschool years transform into a fascination with "what ought to be" in elementary

It's common for adults to interpret this as bickering or talking back and to want to stamp it out. And, on the one hand, I get it. The fighting is loud and often rapidly escalates. But there is tremendous opportunity here if we can only learn to tap into it.

Children at this age are eager to project consequences, to evaluate their own actions and the actions of others, and to categorize actions, events, and people morally. It's the birth of an individual's ethics and it's so exciting!

I'm not very familiar with Montessori for elementary, other than to know that Montessori herself was very aware of this feature of the 2nd plane of development. And to know that independence and the enabling of a child's agency is the goal, not stamping it out.

How do you encourage them further along the path to judging and evaluating *without* imposing a given code? Is that even the right way to think about it? What tools are at their level that they can use to settle disagreements independently in healthy, non-agressive ways?

How do you build on their burgeoning ability to think abstractly and follow logic in this area in particular? What opportunities can you give them to practice and exercise their propensity for devising systems and rules?

Welp, this has been knocking on my door for awhile now, but I can see that Montessori for elementary is definitely going to be my 'professional development' focus for at least the next few months. Can't wait!
