I was blindsided with nostalgia by Justin Trudell’s Nature’s Classroom story. We did the same thing when I went in 1999 (I believe) and I had never thought of it since until today. Clearly wasn’t as jarring for me. Shocked to hear it was still going on in ‘07 though.

Slow start at 3am by dipping on an Eastern Whip-poor-will. 9 species as of 4:45am

6:00am update: 38 species. Things are going SLOW

7:15AM Update: A couple productive stops have me back on a good track. 66 species and counting

9:00AM Update: A clean sweep of all five local Swallow species in one spot has helped me reach my current total of 83 species.

10:30AM Update: Craziest bird of the day, a Dickcissel, found by a fellow birder only a short distance from where I was. Flew right over and got is as #92 for the day. Rare in NH anytime but especially in the spring.

12:00pm Update: Moving on from the river valley and moving on to the mountains. Hopefully a change in habitat brings more birds. At 95 species now.

12:20PM Update: We’ve reached 100 species

2:00PM Update: At 108 species. So tantalizingly close, but I’m starting to run out of birds.

Despite my best efforts, I came 6 species short of tying my single day record of 116 species. I technically saw 111 species if you include one bird I popped over to VT to see. Poor weather and bad luck got me in the end. Here’s the days list: ebird.org/tripreport/372…

A minute fraction of the 15,000+ Red Phalaropes I was lucky enough to witness off the coast of NH today in an unprecedented migratory fallout. A plethora of other great birds and tons of whales and other cetaceans. An incredible day all the way around.
