We had a great panel discussion yesterday on archive, speaking about the reaching out and gathering story from people, the skewed view of archives, the experience of connecting the people...

A very enjoyable History Salon in the stylish building of Royal Photographic Society@Paintworks last Saturday. Billys inspiring talk on his AI-assisted articulation of the images of Tiger Balm Mansion, followed by Kelvin’s contextualisation of Aw Boom Haw’s business empire.

F. Hagger was an Electrical Artificer in the (British) Royal Navy in the 1930s, serving on H.M.S. Medway on the China Station. The well captioned photographs document the ship's trip out east and stopovers in Weihai, Hong Kong, Yantai and Shanghai ⛵ see hpcbristol.net/collections/ha…

My latest Archive pick for China Books Review is Peking Picnic, a 1930s novel of manners featuring evocative descriptions of Old Beijing and timeless observations about what it means to be an expat in China. Also smoking. Lots and lots of smoking.
