Mast cells in smokers and patients with small airway disease and COPD may be associated with airway wall changes and impaired lung function, indicating an active role in maintaining normal tissue homeostasis and, indirectly, in airway architecture bit.ly/3vKxxab

Airway wall lamina propria in patients with Asthma-COPD Overlap (ACO) is hypo-vascular with increase in reticular basement membrane neo-angiogenesis, reflecting smoking-related COPD like pathology and EMT. openres.ersjournals.com/content/early/…

Do not agree with EMT in asthma, no human tissue evidence, in fact negative with no core tissue structural Rbm fragmentation as key to EMT. Evidence is more in vitro in asthma (produced). EMT is central to COPD as evident from empiric human tissue work & further confirmed 😊

Recent work from our research group reporting endothelial TGFβ1, pSMAD2/3, SAMD7 and β-catenin in pulmonary arteries from smokers and COPD informing EndMT. Endothelial SMAD pathway is independent of TGF-β1 in smokers and COPD. portlandpress.com/clinsci/articl… Prem Bhattarai Monica (Wenying) Lu

In this Respiratory Translational Research Group research article, Bhattarai et al. investigate the roles of drivers of endothelial to mesenchymal transition, uncovering an active endothelial SMAD pathway, independent of TGF-β1 in smokers, SAD, and COPD patients. #ClinSci #Smoking doi.org/10.1042/CS2024…

Sharing some insights in the ATS Blue Journal from our recent work on vascular / arterial pruning in smokers, and patients with early COPD. Similar pathology was evident in asthma-COPD overlap patients. EndMT seems central to destructive vascular pathology. atsjournals.org/doi/abs/10.116…
