"President of the Newton Teachers Association Mike Zilles said the results of the strike were “remarkable” with the salary increases they achieved in the contract."

When I was a Brookline paraprofessional, I qualified and received food stamps. Our schools cannot function without our paraprofessionals. They must be treated with dignity and respect, and that includes their pay. One job should be enough.

A Massachusetts Teachers Association survey from 2020 found that nearly 85 percent of its paraprofessional members made $30,000 or less. In some state school districts, hourly wages for paraprofessionals start below the state minimum of $15 per hour. trib.al/4NIywkn

Its more than just a nationwide shortage of WL teachers. The district has actively taken steps to weaken the WL department for several years. There are reasons why resignations and leaves are significantly higher in Brookline’s K-8 WL program compared to other K-8 programs.
