Indeed, last time I checked, neural networks were invented way earlier than 2012. First neuron, 1943, McCulloch & Pitts. Perceptron, 1957, Rosenblatt. ReLU, 1969, Fukushima. Backpropagation, 1970, Linnainmaa. LeNet, 1989, LeCun. LSTM, 1995, Hochreiter & Schmidhuber. Etc.
