New data just released on small boat arrivals and weather conditions in the Channel. As would be expected, people are much more likely to cross on 'red days' (the calmest conditions). Not always the case though: the spike of crossings in autumn 2022 was an exception.

The Migration Advisory Committee has reviewed the financial requirements for Brits and settled migrants to bring partners and children to the UK. They see the final decision as a political one govt must make, so didn't recommend any single threshold. Here's a quick summary🧵

With the government closing the care route to overseas recruitment later this month, international students are likely to be one of the largest sources of workers for social care providers. In fact, they already are. Link to our updated commentary in the next post👇

I spoke to Full Fact about whether different nationalities are more likely to be in prison. Some probably are, but we don't have the data we need to calculate it. Plus any differences we do see will also reflect differences in other characteristics, such as age and income.

New FOI data show that ESOL funding was higher in 2023/24 than at any point since 2010/11 (in real terms) This followed the devolution of the Adult Skills Fund in 2019, as well as demand for ESOL courses from Afghans and Ukrainians arriving on humanitarian routes

From today, 111 jobs will no longer qualify for Skilled Worker visas, but a sizable number will still be able to recruit migrants. In fact, of the 26,900 people who were granted a Skilled Worker visa between October and March, 76% were for jobs that will remain eligible.

In the year March 2025, 192,000 work visas were granted to both EU and non-EU citizens. Our updated work visas briefing looks at the routes work migrants used to come to the UK, the jobs they do once they're here, and how many stay.
