What's stopping us from going lead-free? The health consequences of lead have been known for thousands of years. It is believed that the ancient Roman architect and civil engineer, Vitruvius warned of the dangers of supplying water through lead pipes.

Lead has many industrial benefits. The toxic metal is plentiful as it is a naturally occurring metal from the Earth’s crust. It is durable and has a low melting point of just 327°C and is a super soft metal which makes it extremely easy to form into various shapes.

It has always been hard to quantify exactly just how big of a threat lead poses to humans. It can take years to see the effects of lead on our body, and even after seeing the effects, the symptoms can often be mistaken for other issues.

It would also be extremely costly to change all the infrastructure and plumbing systems with lead content that already exist. Manufacturing processes for commercial plumbing systems have also been slow to make changes to accommodate this need for lead-free plumbing.
