This is not just Chicago. Brown University, too, has drastically reduced the size of its incoming PhD class. Our leading universities are just giving up on humanistic study.

In a surprising development, it turns out that Silva is actually male! (Neutered very young, hence not very male-looking.) Anyway he is now vaccinated, FIV tested (neg), given his wormer and, best of all, renamed as Silvanus, aka Definitely Very Much Our Cat. (3/3)

Les fantômes d’un glorieux passé. Vestiges des œuvres enfouies par les Athéniens après la destruction de l’Acropole par le roi des rois Xerxès, en 480 av. J.-C. Ils furent redécouverts lors des fouilles de 1866.

A giant. Built in 1911, the Fermanville Viaduct once carried the Cherbourg–Barfleur train, nicknamed ‘Tue-Vaques’ (‘Cow-Killer’) for its run-ins with cattle. Blown up in June 1944 by German forces, the line never really recovered — and closed for good in 1950.

I've been on the hunt for a new history/preservation role for a while. I’ve got solid experience, but in Michigan it feels like you can’t move up without a masters degree. If you know me and my work, and have a lead, I’d love to hear from you.
