As a longtime humanitarian who has battled famines and hunger crises, I fear that starvation in Gaza has now passed the tipping point and we are going to see mass-scale starvation mortality. A thread on famine momentum, famine response, and what it means for Gaza today.

It was smart to craft the original agreement with this low-hanging fruit for the Council to improve and claim a win and get the deal done.

It’s hard to find a trend in the electricity system right now that *doesn’t* point to near-term price increases if not a broad affordability crisis. The setup is bad and getting worse. I wrote about it for Heatmap News:

A decade longer! The neighborhood does not want to wait another decade after already waiting decades for development to happen.

Note that Rupert Murdoch has done much more to stand up for free speech via his stewardship of the Wall Street Journal than several of these big media conglomerates.

Must-listen to Jane Flegal and Jesse D. Jenkins on Ezra Klein talking about where clean energy goes from here and the brass tacks of politics around these issues. No one better to talk about the policy and political realities. nytimes.com/2025/07/25/opi…

While a lasting resolution to the crisis in Gaza must involve a return of all hostages and a cessation of Israel’s military operations, these articles underscore the immediate need for action to be taken to prevent the travesty of innocent people dying of preventable starvation.

How New Jersey politicians talk about the state: “I’m proud to raise my family in a state I love.” How I want New Jersey politicians to talk about the state: “I tremble to represent New Jersey, the cradle of global modernity; indeed, the pivot point of world-history itself.”

TIL that even though the US Clean Power Plan was repealed, US power sector emissions have dropped faster than it targeted (basically bc of faster than anticipated transitions to solar and gas). Bummer to me that these pieces of good news aren't more celebrated!

A central theme of the year is Congress giving up power. Confirming Bove after it appears he lied to the Judiciary Committee and made a mockery of the process is another example. Ten years ago the Senate would not have been steamrolled this way on a judicial nominee.

I assumed this was a paraphrase but Secretary Bessent literally says "In a way, it is a backdoor for privatizing Social Security. Social Security is a defined benefit plan paid out..."
