Students in GIS Lab Instructor Ashley Nepp's "Cultural Atlas Production" course recently shared their class project, a cultural atlas of Minneapolis. Students share insight into how this project came to be [thread] #heymac

"Meandering Minneapolis" is a cultural atlas produced by our geography class. It is a curation of visual spreads based off of research projects conducted by each student and celebrates the quirky complexity of Minneapolis’s little known histories, landscapes, and human stories.

Students in the course hail from far and wide across the U.S. but brought their unique perspectives and experiences with Minneapolis to their spreads. As the COVID19 crisis sent many home, we were left missing the cities we had come to call a second home.

Raven McKnight '20 shares: "I was particularly interested in capturing a piece of women’s history, but what I really learned through this process is that there are incredible stories everywhere. You only have to look."

Esther Ramsay '20 writes: "Every river has a hidden history and that can be uncovered with elevation data. I was inspired by other maps that I had seen on historical paths of the river and was determined to make a map that was both informative and looked like a work of art."
