Our last article in The CRISPR Journal on the #accessibility #affordability and #equity for the novel #CRISPR based gene therapies. Therapies are here but are not affordable for many. This is an ethical issue to be solved now. Íñigo de Miguel Jon Rueda Etxebarria #OpenAccess liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/cr…

Sharing a new article, a review on the ethical aspects of geneome alterations (incl. gene editing) approaches applied to animal reproduction research. I will discuss about these issues at the 17th International Conference of #AERA aera.org.es/17-congreso-in… pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39396877/

I invite you to watch this online webinar which I delivered recently for the students of the Vall d'Hebron Institut de Recerca master on "CRISPR Universe: where are we today? From scissors to bridges" where I summarized the current state-of-art of #CRISPR and related technologies. youtube.com/watch?v=GljHge…

The October 2024 issue (anchored by the Urnov guest editorial) is a special issue on "CRISPR Trials": liebertpub.com/toc/crispr/7/5 We'll cover all the research, reviews and perspective in subsequent posts.

The Raúl Pérez Jiménez lab at CIC bioGUNE did it again, after resurrecting Cas9 ancestors in 2023, Ylenia Jabalera et al they just report a new resurrected Cas12a CRISPR nuclease ancestor that could have existed ~3.000 My ago. Published in Nature Biotechnology nature.com/articles/s4158…

This follows a previous similar study, where we had the opportunity to participate, describing several resurrected #CRISPR Cas9 nucleases ranging from ~37 through 2.600 My ago. This collaborative study about Cas9 ancestors was published in Nature Microbiology nature.com/articles/s4156…

Following the publication of this article by the team of Julian Savulescu in nature we have just released a statement on heritable polygenic editing prepared by the ARRIGE Board: ⬇️ arrige.org/documents/

Lluis Montoliu (@lluismontoliu) 's Twitter Profile Photo

In 2018 the irresponsible experiments done by He Jiankui showed the world why it was a bad idea editing one gene on human embryos. Now, a team of Australian scientists led by P. Visscher and J. Savulescu speculates in nature on heritable polygenic editing nature.com/articles/s4158…

Lluis Montoliu (@lluismontoliu) 's Twitter Profile Photo

What was wrong in 2018 continues being wrong in 2025. Hence, pretending to edit the human genome at multiple genes only multiplies the risk of unwanted editions at selected locations and elsewhere. It is simply unsafe and reckless to suggest multiple gene editing on human embryos

Lluis Montoliu (@lluismontoliu) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Furthermore, potential health benefits and disease resistance traits associated with genetic variants do not strictly correlate with the expected behaviors, rather with certain probabilities. A critical commentary has also been published in nature nature.com/articles/d4158…

nature We, from ARRIGE, the association for responsible research and innovation in genome editing, promoting the responsible use of genome editing tools, have also released a statement where we discuss and reject the proposal of heritable polygenic editing. arrige.org/wp-content/upl…
