Our paper led by Mike Schindler is out #OA in The Anatomical Record. We explore how the craniofacial hinge joint balances mobility & stability in helmeted hornbills, birds w/ high-impact head-butting behavior. Thanks Mason Dean for inviting me to join the fun! anatomypubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

Excited to share my first paper is out in #JHE! Big thanks to my co-author Zeray, + funding from The University of Chicago, The Leakey Foundation, and U.S. National Science Foundation! We explore how the cross-sectional geometry of the ape clavicle through ontogeny reflects their locomotor behaviors 🦍🦧🧵sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Helmeted hornbills are known for their violent head-butting—but how does their skull withstand impact? Unlike other birds their craniofacial joint is massively reinforced locking into place like a puzzle. Schindler et al: anatomypubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ar…

Our latest John Fulkerson paper, led by student J. Sieberer, is out in The Knee (my favorite journal name yet). We create & test an AI-driven workflow to automatically calculate patellar tilt in 3-D, facilitating clinical diagnosis of patellar instability. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Hey everyone! Check out our new paper on the evolution of cranial kinesis in birds out in PNAS! pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn… We used 3D muscle modeling, linkage mechanics, and phylo methods to investigate feeding across the dino-bird transition 🦖🐦‍⬛(1/?)

Very much looking forward to this symposium (even though I'll be Zooming in while everyone's in Bordeaux). Thanks to Hugo Dutel for the invitation! Info and registration: eventbrite.fr/e/biomechanica…

No guess work here. With 3D you see it all. Lateral entry to trochlea- just move the tibial tubercle to facilitate patella entry in a stable way. No need to alter the beautiful and congruous trochlea. Knee locked in extension- reliable TTTG, fixed proximal EPTP Easy with 3D plan

A nice conceptual summary of what we’ve learned so far in the Fulkerson group about the importance of studying kneecaps in 3D, led by med student Nancy Park, is out today in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Review: journals.lww.com/sportsmedarthr…

I am honored to announce that our paper revealing a molecular mechanism of evolutionary stasis has won the SSE President's Award This work would have been impossible w/o my colleagues Dan Macguigan, Thomas Near, Daemin Kim, Oliver Orr, Liandong Yang, & Brian Krieser

I'm excited to share that I am defending my dissertation next Tuesday, May 6th! This is the culmination of many years of work, and I am excited to finally be able to share it! It will be at 8:30 AM eastern time, and if you want to join virtually I will post the zoom link a reply!

A week ago now I successfully defended my dissertation and can say I am #PhDone! Thanks to all who came to see it in person or virtually. If you missed it and want to see me talk about lizards for almost an hour, send me a message and I can get you a recording.
