On heavily used wooden wagonways the bye way (empty, uphill) rails lasted 3 years and the main way rails barely a year. Double rails were used so they could be replaced without disturbing the sleepers. #archaeology #industrial #Railways #CoalTwitter

Bossed stones are cut masonry blocks are left raised on the external side. Various theories have been put forward why this is seen in castle walls and fortifications. It is likely that it was to disperse the energy of projectiles, like spaced armour on modern tanks. #Archaeology
