When you liberalize, you win Even India was poorer than Sub-Saharan Africa not too long ago Now that India is liberalized, it's doing much better and has surpassed that part of the world by a massive and growing margin In fact, 1990-2023, Africa only gained $960 PPP per capita

One thing I do agree with Dr Cornje about is that SA is very capable of flipping a switch and growing at 5% within 2-3 years. Same with the Cape. All the ingredients are there.

Perhaps the biggest problem with the modern international system is its insistence on maintaining peace by networking and legitimizing post-colonial elites over the rights of the people they govern. There are ofcourse practical limits to self-determination, but the line

We should find a way to make failed doomer predictions costly. People doom and gloom and sour the discourse, and when they end up wrong, nothing happens.

To my knowledge the most influential sucessionist movement in SAs history was the Natal Secessionists. Really interesting reading this account of the movement. So many of the same challenges as the Cape Independence movement. A lot to learn from.

The industrial core of the country is the Joburg-Durban Axis. As long as that is stable the country won't significantly destabilize. I suspect that if fear of an MKP insurgency becomes significant the ANC will be forced into a coalition to maintain the heartland.
