I'll admit, when I first started comedy, I was different. People would ask me, "what kind of music you play?" I was solely a comedian and had no other entertainment talents.

Gerry Lopez was at one of the earliest surf contest at Makaha. He was intimidated by the area with the 20 foot waves. Then next to him, Buffalo Keaulana surfed by with 2 photographers, wearing shades and smoking a cigarette. It gave Gerry some confidence.

I stopped surfing about when I was 50 years old. The new guys wouldn't let me get a wave. I tell them, "hey, throw us old guys a bone!"

Gerry Lopez' opinion: "as with the wave pool, you think you will get the exact same wave each time but it's not. It's the energy through the water, the mana."

Gerry Lopez' opinion: "The most benefit in surfing is the paddling. From that it builds your upper body and helps your breathing."

I asked Gerry Lopez what is he thinking at this moment? Gerry: "You have already chosen the wave, started paddling and your focus is so intense. Your state of mind goes meditative, like nothing is going through your mind. Just making yourself one with the moment."

I asked Gerry Lopez that at this point, what are you looking at? Gerry: "This is Pipeline and even though I dropped late, I knew it would make a tube for me to stand in."

I asked Gerry Lopez, why does it seem like he stalled or hesitated for a second? Gerry: "I delayed my turn a little for the wave. It's really the first that I am looking at the wave and now I can position myself on the wave."

This is what always got me about watching Gerry Lopez surf: wipe your nose on the way in! Casual!

Gerry Lopez explained his habit of touching his nose in the tube. It was a tribute to Phil Edwards who was the first to surf Pipeline. Phil was famous for the 'nose tweek.'

Past Makaha was an area that had good waves, but you can ruin a board at the wall. I had a Weber Performer and leashes were a new aspect to the boards. So I drilled a hole in the skeg (fin), tied a rope to my feet in hopes of pulling the loose board away from danger.

The Hawaiian term 'mahi mahi' for this fish seems to be used on the Mainland too. That word, which means "strong", seems more appetizing than calling it 'dolphinfish.'

What dis? It's Hawaii's version of squirrels: the mongoose!

Just wanted to highlight the Annual Women of the Sea race which last year had 75 crews of women from all over the world competing.

Why do I know what was above the old Cornet's store in Makaha? Old man Cornet used to live up there. But when he moved, one of my schoolmate's family moved in there. That apartment above had air conditionings that covered the whole wall. Beautiful
