Taking the long view, the spectacular failure of Cameron’s plan to avoid a split Tory vote in 2015 ought to teach some lessons. #1 may be, if you pander to extremists, they don’t go away, they get stronger. Politicians across Europe should take heed. #ToryWipeout #BrexitShambles

As irksome as it is that a massive, joyous Labour win is being overshadowed by chatter about F***ge and his (potential) handful of MPs, at least the latter will get more scrutiny than they’ve ever had. It won’t do them any favours.

Indications so far of low turnout are depressing. All democracies are struggling against polarisation and disenchantment because, ultimately, government is always a compromise that campaigns never reflect. Hopefully the big Labour majority can shift that.

This election strongly suggests that the power of the Tory press is broken. All those shrieking headlines about Starmer and Rayner have done nothing. Even the pivot in the last few days to discourage F***ge votes, no impact. Where next? It scarcely matters.

The Tories (and to some extent Labour) will look at the R*form vote and think they should have gone further right on immigration. That would be a mistake. Austerity is the root cause of most of the country’s woes that people are feeling.
