Searching for better genetics for deep sowing canola. CSIRO/GRDC experiments near York WA comparing canola emergence from 2cm & 5cm depths. On left, a current canola hybrid variety; on right, a European OP variety with much better emergence from 5cm. CSIRO GRDC #futurecrops

Long hypocotyl canola giving long coleoptile wheats a run for their money with deep sowing! Here is one o’seas canola introduction performing well at Tabbita NSW with sowing at 5cm depth. Great potential for new genetics! Eurofins Kalyx Scott Vaessen GRDC #Futurecrops

Digging for buried treasure with spatula. What happens when someone moves the marker stick and you can’t find the buried soil temperature loggers.

Do you know that #oats stem have extended superpowers called #mesocotyl that no #wintercereals possess? This may be the answer for #deepsowing! 🌾🍃 Tune in to my presentation CSIRO #studentsymposium next Monday to find more about oats superpowers. 🦹‍♀️💥 GRDC InterGrain

Massive congrats Big Fella!!! So deserving. The impact of your world-class genetic research will endure and deliver in-field farm gate value improvements for decades to come GRDC CSIRO

Ben McTaggart Justin Kudnig Julianne Hill Grower Group Alliance CSIRO GRDC West Hi Ben. Our CSIRO/GRDC project has shown clear genetic differences in canola establishment. Most striking result is that longer hypocotyls improve emergence from deep sowing. Bad news is AUS varieties have short hypocotyls grdc.com.au/resources-and-…

Excited to work with POGP funding for my Master’s project looking at ability of #oats to emerge from #deepsowing! Oats sown at 100 mm on the left vs 30 mm. #Mesocotyl is an extension of #coleoptile, where oats is the only #cereal to have it 👀🌱

You get to work on two deep sowing projects led by Andrew_Fletcher and Greg Rebetzke and will work closely with a team of #APSIM modellers in collaboration with agronomists both inside and outside of CSIRO for a well-rounded post-doc experience.
