Funny reading all of the uniform negativity around big tech and the tech industry. Easy to pile on, harder to look long term. I’m no fan of the behemoths, but the quality and scale of their businesses are undeniable. Greatest of our time. I’ll take the other side, Mr. Market.

Biggest hiring lesson for start ups I learned: Be very careful when you hire fancy execs from big companies. They often can’t deliver results under constrained resources. What makes you successful in a big company is very different than what makes you successful in a start up.

In retrospect, I sold this at *the worst* possible time and miss it terribly. That’s life. I had very good reasons to let it go and then the world changed. Always clear in hindsight. Time to do it again (as soon as build costs return to normal, they’re 3x what they were 😳).

The thing required to "skip steps" is Audacity. To leave the job that everyone stays at, to go for a new position, or create something of your own. To make big asks, and big moves. Departing from what everyone else is doing, saves years of time.

This will never truly land until you experience it. But try to savor every day of good health that you have. Once it goes, it’s very hard to get it back.
