I just remembered that the Senate voted on the Prevent Government Shutdowns Act in 2023 as an amendment to an annual funding bill, needed 60 votes at the time but fell short 56-42. govexec.com/management/202…

Given that the Trump admin is illegally impounding Congressionally allocated funds, it's hard to imagine it not illegally delaying minesterial permits for clean energy projects Congress requires it to issue. It delayed NYC congestion pricing for years in its first term.

Police forces in urban areas could rapidly build up trust amongst the public by initiating high-profile package theft and bike theft sting operations. They're pervasive, impact QOL significantly, easy to deter with a few headlines, and easy to set up stings for.

Multifamily construction does not pencil on vacant lots in most of California. Lord help the person trying to tear down existing housing and make apartments work. Developers, you know, actually need to make money when they build.

While there are legitimate questions about the long term effectiveness of carbon capture & sequestration at scale, it has been difficult to find out because practically every CO2 sequestration pipeline has been smothered in the crib by NIMBY opposition.

NIMBYism isn't limited to infrastructure & housing. It's killing recreation. In the PNW, a glamping company faced public oppositon & court challenges. wweek.com/culture/2024/1… A zip line park was killed when a Facebook page with 800 followers fought it. columbian.com/news/2023/sep/…

Thomas Hochman I keep repeating to everybody I see that the limits on data center growth are the same limits that new manufacturing faces (minus emissions). If we can't build data centers, we sure as heck won't be able to beat China in industrial production.

Corvallis, Oregon The top news story in the local paper is the closure of another school because of a severe drop in enrollment. The next top article is a NIMBY editorial opposing housing construction next to a grocery store on the perimeter of town. Zero self awareness.

Jake Auchincloss's views regarding the future of society and how automation and Baumol's cost disease will change the economy over time are extremely forward thinking. He has a great mind, and we need many more like him in Congress. worksinprogress.news/p/treating-cos…

This chart doesn't say that. It shows that social media clout is a complete wash electorally for nearly every politician under ~1M followers. Stop hiring comms staffers to make tweets. Reallocate their FTE towards investigations, committee work, & constituent services.

.Hannah Ritchie highlighted this well: The 3.5% expected annual load growth to accomodate EVs, data centers, & reindustrialization isn't unprecedented. America accomodated far greater load growth decades ago. Our barriers are legal, not physical. sustainabilitybynumbers.com/p/usa-electric…

Harvard's endowment is larger than the GDP of Jordan. If the university is cutting Ph.D research slots, it's not due to the Trump admin's science funding cuts, it's because the university is choosing to. It values exclusivity more than the societal benefits of its research.
