This weekend, I was proud to join my colleague, Rep. Beth Helfrich for NC in Huntersville, to knock doors and talk to voters about their concerns, from DMV to premiums. She is a champion for government doing its job & doing right by the people. We need more people in politics like her!

I hope all the students of OrangeCountySchools and Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools schools (including our daughter!) are having a happy first day of school! I hope our UNC-Chapel Hill students’ semesters are off to a great start too as the second week begins!

With Medicaid in danger for children and families and rising costs, the NC General Assembly needs to step up for the people with a responsive state budget. The state budget is now nearly 2 months late. The people of North Carolina deserve much better.

Today we honor Ret. U.S. Army SGT Michael Verardo. Governor Josh Stein ordered all US & NC flags to be lowered to half-staff today. Verardo served with All American Division (inactive) & was catastrophically wounded in Afghanistan in 2010. Despite his injuries, he continued to support wounded vets.

What the GOP-led General Assembly is about to do this week further ignores real issues facing North Carolinians - skyrocketing food, housing & healthcare costs. We’re 1 of 2 states now that hasn’t passed a state budget. Instead, it’s about to pass new maps to disempower voters.

This week, the Grosevenor Garden Tour allowed state legislators a chance to see a great model for inclusive, affordable housing for North Carolinians with I/DD. This collaborative between HOPE NC, CASA & Alliance Health has created needed options for community living!

Due to uncertainty at the federal and state levels, 1.4 million vulnerable North Carolinians don’t know if they’ll have food benefits next month. If you live in Orange Co and you’re facing this uncertainty or know someone who is, please spread the word about help here in Orange.
