The FSMA Produce Safety Rule (PSR) requires specific records. Microgreen growers should keep additional records to ensure that practices are being carried out correctly. Other documentation, such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), may be helpful. all-about-microgreens.org/growers.html#s…

Exempt farms must follow labeling and signage rules when selling produce that is considered “covered” by the Produce Safety Rule. You can find a full definition and list of rarely consumed raw produce items under “Are you covered by the Produce Rule?” all-about-microgreens.org/growers.html#s…

Many growers are overwhelmed with the multitude of farm food safety best practices and recommendations. These Decision Trees were created to help you prioritize your farm food safety practices and begin to build your own farm food safety plan. all-about-microgreens.org/growers.html#s…

A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is a document that provides step-by-step instructions on how to complete a specific task properly. Use whatever terminology and layout work for you, your workers, and your microgreen growing operation. all-about-microgreens.org/growers.html#s…

The FSMA Produce Safety Rule does not require a written farm food safety plan, but writing a plan helps growers get organized and focused on produce safety, as well as prepare for buyer requirements and third-party audits. all-about-microgreens.org/growers.html#s…

Wash microgreens when preparing your meal, not anytime before. Microgreens are very fragile and washing too early can make the problem worse. It damages their tissue and introduces moisture that increases bacteria growth and shortens their shelf life. all-about-microgreens.org/consumers.html

Eat microgreens no later than 3-5 days after harvest. Storing and handling your microgreens properly will extend their life so that you can get the most out of them for longer. all-about-microgreens.org/consumers.html

At room temperature, microgreens go bad very quickly. Don’t expect microgreens cut from their roots to last more than a day or two outside of a refrigerator. If kept cool, cut microgreens’ shelf life can be extended by another day or two, depending on the species.

Studies show that CO2 and O2 levels and water vapor pressure can affect the shelf life of fresh produce. However, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to control the environment this way to preserve microgreens unless you have a science lab in your home. all-about-microgreens.org/consumers.html

Microgreens should be kept dry. A moist environment is perfect for growing the bacteria that can cause foodborne illness. Yet another reason to wait to wash your microgreens until right before you eat them!

Microgreens are very delicate, and handling them roughly harms the plant. Even the process of washing them – which is recommended before eating – will damage the plants. You should only wash microgreens right before you eat them, not any sooner. all-about-microgreens.org/consumers.html

The act of cutting microgreens is a stressor to the plant. Not only are they no longer absorbing water through the roots, but also cut microgreens are literally wounded plants. If possible, avoid cutting microgreens until you’re ready to eat them.
