How do say thanks to a good friend? Well...if you're a medieval English bishop, you send an eel! It was common practice for bishops and other high ranking clergymen to show their respect for each other by sending gifts of "great eels." Because lesser eels just won't do!

The last Friday of the semester, and one of my students brought cupcakes for the class. And yes, friends…those are eels. I am so happy.

Marsupials are so associated with Australia that it may surprise you to discover that the first marsupial known to European science actually came from North America. bit.ly/3AzUJH8

Had a lightning bolt last night about how immunocapitalism ties in to the Protestant Work Ethic and how it's an epidemiological brutality utilised to mark whiteness in the South. I'm writing the paper directly. It's a chunk of theory I've desperately needed to nail down.

This is where the King withdrew for private prayer during the Coronation and, hidden from public view, put on the Imperial State Crown that is surmounted by St Edward’s Sapphire, taken from the saint’s supposed Coronation ring

Visited what is believed to be the oldest surviving gravestone for a Black person in the Americas, an enslaved teenager named Cicely, owned by pastor of one of the oldest churches in the area. The gravesite is in the church’s cemetery, across street from Harvard University.

The opening of my Implicit Religion UK conference paper just came to me, and it's the theme -- how "The City That Care Forgot" is part of the deliberate lack of infrastructure and public health initiatives that serves to enforce and enshrine white supremacy in New Orleans.

Found a fascinating theme in William Wells Brown's 1853 version of CLOTEL, where he portrays death by yellow fever as a divine judgement for being a slaver. This is the flip side of the white New Orleans elite view of surviving yellow fever as proof of moral fortitude.

I calculated my reading time wrong, I thought I read about 35% faster than I do (Southern accents do not lend themselves to a brisk pace), and I couldn't finish reading my conference paper. I know this is a thing that happens, but it feels embarrassing as all get out.

Today marked one of the great innovations of the 19th century: the first telegram. The world became smaller, massages moved faster, and the Information Age began to dawn, all from Baltimore, Maryland.
