Have you ever wondered what the Jarrow Slake looked like before it was filled in ? Well ....I own an oil of it, painted from Simonside in 1878. Tyne Dock was on the east of the Slake. The painting is of the west side looking towards Hayhole & Howdon. South Tyneside Libraries

Mid November I sent a couple of cards and letters to Australia air mail informing relatives of a change of address. Yesterday I received a card in return to my old address post marked 10th December. I could have swam across quicker. What's going on with the postal system?

My cab driver just now, a Brit of Pakistani origin, on the rape scandal. "Do Labour think Muslims want to go easy on paedos? I've got two little girls. I want them bastards castrated." The reluctance to offend the imagined sensitivities of minorities is both foolish and racist.

It's a pity about WH Smith. It is about the one high street store I still use. They have a good range of train magazines and stationery. But the high street business model is out-of-date. Accept it and let evolution take its course.

I read this and my first thought was of Orwell's Animal Farm where the pigs explain their extra rations are actually in the best interests of the other malnourished comrades

Northumberland has it all. I feel blessed to be a Northumbrian. Mind you, if it was a bit warmer and drier I wouldn't complain.
