Try as they may, California's attempts to find other uses for rice hulls and rice products have not been successful. Modern Mill from Mississippi does appear to be. Probably because they have a lower cost of production and not so many enviro regs latimes.com/spaces/build/t…

⚠️ The New World Screwworm isn't just a pest. A new outbreak of New World Screwworm could devastate Texas’ $30 billion livestock industry. Protecting our herds means protecting our state’s economy and food supply. Stay vigilant and report concerns immediately

Hey, I know this guy. James Chinchiolo, Lodi Blooms, who grows cherries and walnuts, was one of several California farmers to host the new US secretary of agriculture.

When you stop by a farmer friend's house to drop off rice samples. Homemade marmalade & pickled peppers (that he & his wife grew), peppers, tomatoes & table grapes. The grapes are low input - he didn't apply gibb, a natural plant growth regulator used to enlarge the berries. Yum!

I attended a 3-hour beer camp recently & the owner/brewer was big on sourcing local. He uses Admiral Maltings & had a grower from nearby Thomsen Hops speak. When I asked why he didn't source his rice from California (the No. 2 rice state), he just shrugged #drinklocal #thinkrice

Rice delphacid now found north of I-40 in Arkansas. Small numbers but clearly on the move. Picture is not from that area - just a good example of adults and nymphs. Be on the lookout if you have green rice. Let us know if you find them. Nick

Cultivating young #artichoke plants that were recently transplanted near Castroville, CA. These will begin producing next spring. With cool breezes and overcast mornings, Castroville dubs itself the "Artichoke Capital of the World." #CAgrown

Really cool to see new technology running in a commercial field. This is Carbon Robotics Laserweeder, which images the plants & feeds them into an onboard computer. Artificial intelligence & machine learning differentiate weeds from the crop. It then uses lasers to zap the weeds

Not surprising that the invasive golden mussel has shown up in two S. California lakes. It breeds like rabbits & the minute larvae, or veligers, can be transported miles through waterways & hitchhike on boats. It was first found in 2024 near Stockton CA sfgate.com/la/article/sou…

Rice harvest is kicking off in Northern California. The mild growing conditions have pushed yields, putting smiles on many growers' faces. It's too early to tell about quality, but folks are optimistic. #think_rice #CAgrown

I'm seeing more small plantings of #agave. This one was on the outskirts of Woodland, CA. I saw another one in San Joaquin County later the same day. Is there that much of a market for locally produced agave spirits? It can't be called #tequila if it's made outside Mexico
