This man gave me my big break in life (Tata scholarship for Indian students) and my father his (young engineer from Muzaffarpur landing a job at the steel plant in Jamshedpur). Two instances in an ocean of lives transformed. An unmatched legacy.

A sensible article gently taking down a piece published by members of the EAC few days ago, that ironically invoked a foreign hand (book by American journalist) to diss foreign NGOs and wrongly cited all-India sex ratios as child sex ratios! indianexpress.com/article/opinio…

So rewarding when you’re finally cool enough to hang out and be friends with your first boss who you were equal parts in awe and terrified of (partly because they were so good at everything they did) cc: Shobhini Mukerji J-PAL South Asia

Best diwali ad as far as I’m concerned: female social networks, FLFP and entrepreneurship all rolled in one, also meta because we also have persuasion via the ad itself. Happy 🪔 world hoping the collective load gets lighter!

Nervous and excited for my first every NEUDC talk tomorrow (I hear it's a rite of passage for young dev econs) -- I'll be taking over Harvard CID twitter over the next two days sharing some of the inspiration online. Follow along if you aren't making it this year!

What JK Galbraith wrote in 1958 about US resonates in India today. "In a community where public services have failed to keep abreast of private consumption things are very different. Here, in an atmosphere of private opulence and public squalor, the private goods have full sway."

Can female leaders help to contain conflict violence? In my job market paper I study this question empirically in the context of the Colombian 🇨🇴 civil war. A quick 🧵summarizing my main findings👇#EconJobMarket

5/ Human capital takes a hit: 🚸 Children in regions with higher NGO deregistration attend fewer NGO-run schools, with girls hit hardest. 🤰Rural women are less likely to get prenatal care, even a year later. 💉Immunization rates drop, especially for girls in rural areas.

My fabulous student Priyoma Mustafi is on the job market. Her excellent JMP demonstrates that failed HH information pooling is not due to reluctance to learn from one’s spouse. A domain with common knowledge of expertise shows successful pooling and directed communication.

Super interesting work by Priyoma Mustafi essentially rationalizing through experiments downstream savings impacts of spouses failing to cooperate documented in Schaner (2015). jstor.org/stable/24739037 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
