In June, our Consulate in #Chengdu hosted the second Summer Business Reception for the Australian business and investor community in Southwest China. Australian firms offer local consumers world-class consumer products, as well as health, design, education and tourism services.

Tonight I met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.   We have our differences, but it is in both our countries’ interests for the relationship to be stabilised.   An important discussion about a range of bilateral, regional, trade and consular issues of concern.

Our consulate in Chengdu was proud to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Perth-Chengdu sister city relationship with Chengdu Vice-Mayor Lin Nan 林楠 and Perth Mayor Basil Zempilas. Leaders noted the warmth and depth of the relationship and hoped to visit each other soon.

On Friday, Australia’s Consul-General in Chengdu judged the final round of the Chongqing Meets Australia competition after listening to speeches in English by local students. C-G Neary also signed an MoU on tourism ties with the Chongqing Tourism Commission and Tourism Australia.

Chengdu is known as a talent hotspot in China. Earlier this week Ambassador Fletcher heard from Australian alumni in Chengdu about how their qualifications are helping them to achieve their life goals in diverse fields from arts to aviation, mining and banking.

During his visit to southwest China this week, Ambassador Fletcher engaged with local business, government representatives, as well as Australian investors and alumni at receptions held in both Chengdu China and Chongqing.

Australia’s first diplomatic mission to China was the Chungking Legation, now in modern day Chongqing’s E’ling Park. While in southwest China this week, Ambassador Fletcher took a stroll through time, commenting on the rich history of the Legation site and its ongoing importance.

Our Consul-General in Chengdu was pleased to visit the Costa blueberry farm and see Australian avocados being cultivated alongside macadamia nuts at the Yunnan Tropical Plants Research Institute during her first official visit to Xishuangbanna.
