A big irony was that we were told that Trump was a ‘fake conservative,’ a louche, unserious entertainer, but actually the second Trump administration understands its mission to be the dismantling of the entire postwar progressive apparatus, an until-now unthinkable ambition.

I predict left-leaning commentators will interpret this as somehow being symmetrical with what the left has done over the past decade and a half. The difference is these are real slights and the left persecuted people for untrue things, like false racism or sexism accusations.

Charlie Kirk was the kind of conservative that progressives claim to like. Calm, rational, substantive, open to respectful engagement with the other side. But they unremittingly demonized him anyway.

The president is laying a pretext for investigations and other actions against a currently undefined group of people and organizations in the wake of Kirk’s murder, in ways he has not for other murders:
