I’ve handled the review of > 1000 papers at @nature. Over time, you notice aspects of presentation on which reviewers tend to comment. In the interests of minimizing hassles during review, I offer the following suggestions (a bit targeted to climate papers).

As you read my papers, please remember that anything that you didn’t like was requested by reviewers and everything that you did like was my idea

Increasing soil organic matter is difficult. How difficult? Here are the numbers: To increase SOM 1%➡️1.1% (=11 tons in top 6"), with 1%/yr loss, requires ~6.7 tons/ac biomass = 223 corn or 239 bu/ac wheat crops. See my calculations, do your own...csanr.wsu.edu/putting-number…

Hot off the press: another article from my PhD research! This article shows how cover crops improve soil health and store organic C in irrigated cropping systems. Thank you, co-authors Rajan Ghimire Veronica Acosta Martinez. Here's the 50-day access link authors.elsevier.com/a/1i6mUcA-Inxyp

Recently, a paper on #covercrops & #soilcarbon made a lot of noise. We believe the analysis was flawed and biased, see our comment Christopher Poeplau @angers_da ROMENS damien beillouin Claire Chenu Julien DEMENOIS Daniel Plaza-Bonilla @EricJustes @ChiaraDeNotaris onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…

PUBLICATION ALERT! Our recent article showed cover cropping potential to sequester carbon in semiarid irrigated forage systems. Four years of cover cropping resulted in 7–22% greater soil organic C storage at 0–80 cm profile than the control. authors.elsevier.com/c/1iX1Ic13yZGdP

"How did this get past the reviewers??" I am again asking that we stop blaming reviewers for bad papers. Reviewers spend time & effort with no compensation, and their suggestions are often overlooked. The people responsible are those who actually wrote the paper -- the authors

Excited to share our new publication! Integrating alfalfa into bermudagrass maintained similar forage yields as monocultures. Mixtures improved forage nutritional quality, while soil carbon and nitrogen pools remained unaffected. doi.org/10.1002/agj2.7… #ForageScience #SoilHealth
