Spoke with Whitney Young students this week about the power of their voices and education. I shared my commitment to uplifting Black and Brown communities and why I’m running for the Chicago School Board—to bring real change to CPS, with a focus on the community.

Spent the morning at Burbank Elementary. I spoke with parents about their concerns and how they want the school to improve. People fight for what they help to build, and I have and will continue working with parents, students, and the community to build a better CPS.

Teaching the day after the 2016 election was one of the hardest days I’ve had as an educator. Thank you to all the school staff tomorrow for holding space, supporting our students and practicing hope as a discipline.

Covered up the murder of LaQuan McDonald and closed the most public schools in the history of our country BUT this move sounds very DNC… Article: Axelrod pushes for Rahm Emanuel as DNC chair thehill.com/homenews/campa…

I've said it before and can't believe I have to say it again: No amount of rebranding can change the fact that Rahm Emanuel’s political career has been an abject failure—neoliberal centrism is exactly the wrong direction for the Democratic Party. inthesetimes.com/article/no-rah…

Former mayor Rahm Emanuel's program of school closures and privatization decimated Black & working class communities in Chicago. It took 34-day hunger strike to save the last open enrollment high school in our neighborhood under his tenure. He deserves no position of leadership!

We don’t have “failing schools,” but as a public we’ve been failed. I’m excited to sit on a Board that will not do the bidding of corporations, but will do the bidding of the people in our communities. Thanks for having me WTTW - Chicago PBS Chicago Tonight!
