Our students need recess, unstructured play, physical education, all the Arts, and their extracurricular activities! That's how we make their social/emotional health a priority and actually increase their academic achievement as well.

From Lisa Burman: "The agentive learning culture we hope to create empowers children to use their internal energy to engage in learning: to do, make, create, move, problem solve, make decisions, singe, dance, and live and learn fully."

We hire teachers based on their strengths, but then we manage them based on their weaknesses. This is a morale buster. Leaders, help them develop those strengths this new school year and watch them do amazing things!

A3: International school admins can hire more international staff who have diverse backgrounds to support multilingual learners. Schools boast about their student population, let's have them boast about their teacher diversity as well! #PubPDasia #DiversityMatters

Teachers who choose to stay in the classroom over moving to administration are leaders too! Honor their choice, dedication, & professionalism. Effective leaders actually embrace this choice and leverage their talents and expertise to benefit the whole school.

Let's not penalize kids for being kids. When they're stuck in desks for too long, it's no wonder they get fidgety or chatty. While there's certainly a time and place for focused learning, we must also provide more opportunities for them to play, move, socialize, & be childlike!

We spend 50% more hours in school than Finland. They have NO standardized tests until PISA in HS and they outperform us every time. They have multiple recesses daily, & options like crafts, home Ec, PE, Arts. etc. And teachers have more control over teaching than politicians!

Teachers who receive regular recognition & appreciation are: * More productive * More engaged in school * More likely to stay with school * More likely to receive higher satisfaction scores from students & parents * View school culture more positively Yes, Appreciation matters!

Recess and play are SEL. They help decrease aggressive and off task behavior as well as decease anxiety and depression . They increase self regulation of emotions and improve academic performance! Let them play!

πŸ” Not completing homework is not proof of insufficient learning. Thus, missing homework shouldn't be recorded as a zeroβ€”it's simply missing data. Better, don't grade homework at all. #LeadInclusion #EdLeaders #Teachers #UDL #SBLchat #TG2Chat #TeacherTwitter

Justin Baeder, PhD If homework is graded, sts aren’t completing it for the sake of learning (and they’re probably copying it from each other in the hallway anyway). I don’t grade hw. Some kids do it, some don’t. But those who do, are completing the work for themselves, not for a false reward.

Taking away recess for incomplete homework is counterproductive. Recess is essential for their physical, social, and emotional well-being, especially for the kids who need it most. Research also shows homework has little impact on academic achievement in elementary school.
