I’m saying this as a poor kid valedictorian who had a full scholarship: expecting high-achieving poor kids to be perfect to afford higher ed isn’t healthy, especially when they get there and are surrounded by mediocre rich kids whose privilege insulates them from consequence.

I am a professor and I really like doing teaching, research, and service work. But sometimes I feel like most of what I do is actually not teaching, research, OR service. It is emails and paperwork. Gah.

The real story is not Michigan’s DEI offices, it’s the fact that ~10% of Michigan’s students come from the top 1% of the income distribution, 66% of students from the top 20%. Michigan is the LEAST socioeconomically diverse highly selective public university in the United States.
