Just received a package from the UK, from the good people of Working Classicists. I'm so excited. Thank you very much. I'll be enjoying these like a legionary enjoys a nice and quiet hike in the woods.

Hullo

You might have noticed (or not noticed) us being a bit quieter at the mo.

Our wee team of two has been hit with some rough stuff (family illness/mental health) and we don’t have much time on our hands rn.

We’ll still publish articles etc and be back properly soon xx

We are LOVING the nominations so far, but there's still time for you to let us know of other people in Classics who make a difference to you or the community in general.

And wouldn't you just kick yourself if you didn't nominate them?

According to the Egyptians, you could learn a text by ingesting it. In Setne I, Naneferkaptah drinks the ashes dissolved in water of a papyrus with the Book of Thoth magical formulae. In fact, the verb 𓂝𓅓𓄈𓀁 ʿm means “to swallow” and “to know, understand” (Coptic ⲉⲓⲙⲉ).

Look at how well preserved these shoes are. Discovered at Vindolanda, the smaller shoes probably belonged to women or teenagers.
