I should've posted this yesterday...

On VE Day, May 8, 1945...

'At Bad Abling, Germany, in full view of the POW compound, a North American Mustang, catches the wreck of a Messerschmitt Bf 109 with a wingtip & cartwheels.'

Pilot survived with minor cuts and bruises.

in 1945: a RAF Lancaster [RF230] transporting POW´s crashes in Somme (France). All 30 aboard die. Shortly after take-off, crew reported control problems before plane went down. It´s likely movement of passengers, along with crew actions, induced a loss of control.

Many wartime airfields grew their own crops, and kept animals. Being near farmland certainly helped.

Here's a thread I once posted all about the humble pig. Sadly for the pigs, they were a food source at RAF & USAAF Stations rather than source of comfort. 🥓🐷

Footage of a captured Messerschmitt 109F on a British airfield (I believe somewhere in Kent) after a forced-landing, 1941.

'Slap happy Hermann will be cross'

The classic British Pathé commentary is fantastic, and worth a listen.

On this day 79 years ago, Victory in Europe.
Here's the RAF Holmsley South chapel service from the day.

We may tell our sons who see the light,
High in the Heavens, their heritage to take,
We saw the Powers of Darkness put to flight,
We saw the morning break.

Hawker Typhoon pilots of 257 Squadron at RAF Warmwell in Dorset, August 1943.

The squadron was sponsored and supported with donations from Burma. Burmese pilot Htin Yain Lao is seen top middle. He was KIA in January 1945.
