We are looking forward to discussing the report’s contents and the changing role of the PhD in Irish higher education.

Next week the PWO will be releasing a 60+ page report on PhD employment models across Europe.

The necessity of recognising PhD researchers as workers is becoming more and more evident!

PhDs are workers in all but name, pay and conditions - let's change that!

With this ballot, it is clear that PhD researchers are unhappy with their situations, and we will remain clear in our demands to UCC that all PhD researchers should be paid a living stipend, and have protection as workers, not just students.

PhDs are considerably more prepared to withdraw voluntary contribtutions to the university, such as participating in open days, as well as undertaking protests, which have found success in other PWO branches around the country.

PhDs are split on whether they'd be comfortable openly voicing their discontent for funding bodies, understandably so as their income is directly dependent on maintaining a good relationship with these bodies.

PhDs however would feel more comfortable in withdrawing certain forms of labour, such as marking of exam scripts and exam invigilation, as typically this isn't necessary for their degree.

There is however uncertainty around what disruptive actions, if any they would be willing to take in order to push for these changes, as withdrawal of labour from the university could directly impact a researchers enrolment status.

This ballot sought to determine how satisfied PhD researchers in UCC were with the national review of state supports for PhDs, including stipend increases for PhDs funded by SFI/IRC, and of the 57 PhD researchers who responded, the vast majority were dissatisfied.

From the 27th of November to the 1st of December, UCC Students' Union conducted a ballot in conjunction with the UCC branch of the Postgraduate Workers Organisation.
