May 5th marks Liberation Day in the Netherlands, a moment to contemplate our freedom. This year, let's reflect on the realities of war and the importance of global cooperation in securing peace. The privilege of freedom demands responsibility from all of us.

On May 4th, the Netherlands commemorates World War II victims and people who died during wars and peace operations. Tonight, we observe 2 minutes of silence at 8pm CEST in honour of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and peace.

Together with the EU and NATO, the Netherlands stands united with Germany, Czechia, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden and Lithuania in condemning all Russian activities which aim to degrade our critical infrastructure, weaken our societies, and influence democratic processes. 1/2

The Netherlands welcomes continued diplomatic dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the recent agreement on use of the 1991 Alma Ata Declaration for border delimitation. We welcome joint steps which contribute to regional peace and security.

Since the start of the war, thousands of Ukrainian civilians have been arbitrarily detained by Russia. Detainees have also been subjected to torture and sexual violence. I strongly condemn these appalling acts, as reported by the OSCE Moscow Mechanism fact-finding mission. 1/2
