A quick thought:

Most of the new metro/LRTs lines is LA are being dug under 30-40m wide straight boulevards.

Turin is building a mainline 2.7 km 2-track rail C&C tunnel with one station plus a 400m long road underpass in the middle of a 50m wide boulevard, for 175M€.

California has doubled its population since 1970, the Bay Area and LA metro area have not doubled theirs. These YIMBY project isn’t to get everybody to live in the major metro areas, it’s to let them keep pace with the state’s growth
