I've just read «In Praise of Shadows»(陰翳礼讃) (Tanizaki, 1933). Mostly about the aesthetic importance of shadows in Japanese tradition. The Est/West dichotomy is floppy. However, the argument about the aesthetic superiory of illusion over raw reality is elegant.
