The bigger problem with the Trump balcony thing is that TV news folks are broadcasting it like they can’t help themselves. It’s only an event because the press makes it one. In a choice between ratings & democracy, it’s ratings for them in a landslide.

I still can’t get over how bad the climate change section of the debate was last night. This is the consequence of no climate questions in debates for years. The questions were childish, no follow-up questions for basic information, & there was almost no talk of solutions.

One positive trend from the results is racial depolarization. A country where one party becomes increasingly diverse while white voters move toward the other party is not a good recipe for democracy. It is good that the Republican electorate is becoming more diverse.

It looks like Biden will trade Ohio & Florida for Arizona & Georgia compared to 2012. That shows a lot of stability, despite the firsts. The trade may not work for Democrats over the long-term, however, as the tipping point state has moved further to the right of the popular vote

Roe predated IVF, so the truth is we don’t know what will happen. And if you have frozen embryos, you should be watching closely. But we also need your voice. We need you to share. We need you to vote. 10/10

How did Latino voting patterns change in 2020? In a new working paper, Bernard L. Fraga, @emwest07, and I find that increases in relative Trump support were most pronounced among conservative, low SES, and 1st gen U.S-born Latinos.

Thanks to Matt Grossmann for having me on to talk about a bunch of my research and research by some of the people I love to read, e.g. Drew Engelhardt. It was a lot of fun!

More data from our (me, Yphtach Lelkes and shanto iyengar) lab: Both parties reject political violence. 9,000 interviews over five weeks show that support for political violence is consistently less than the margin of error.

Three surprising results on support for democratic norm violations from our lab (w/ Yphtach Lelkes) Democrats support anti-democratic behavior at levels that are similar to (or exceed) Republicans. Surprisingly, about 8% of Democrats want to reducing voting options for Republicans.

The Journal of Politics took 2+ months to desk reject my last submission. Submitted another on Nov 12 & just received confirmation that no editor has looked. This is not to criticize—they gave a reason & I'm sympathetic. But if you need a timely decision, avoid the JOP right now.
