Using syllable types to read longer wrds can take you out of rding and tax working mmry according to Seidenberg Reading. So what can we do instead? John Walker, Sounds-Write suggests to "...syllabify the wrd & then deal with each sound in every syllable as you would in a single syllable word."

Working with "semantic gradients" today. I started with two polar opposite words: frigid and scorching. Each group had to arrange their words on a continuum and explain their reasoning. The first graders loved it! Teaching in Davis
